Is a Bill of Sale Necessary for Selling a Vehicle in Nebraska?

When selling a vehicle to another resident of Nebraska, you can use any one of the following documents:

  • Nebraska motor vehicle bill of sale. This document serves multiple purposes. A bill of sale records the transition of ownership, helps register a vehicle, and proves that buyers are rightful owners of their assets.
  • Nebraska Department of Revenue Form 6. This form must be provided to the County Treasurer alongside a Nebraska Sales Tax and Tire Fee Statement. Form 6 is currently not available for download; the only way to obtain it is through contacting the County Treasurer.

Mind that under the law of the state of Nebraska, bills of sale require notarization. In addition, some vehicles aren’t titled, so you may sell or purchase them without a bill of sale.
