What You Should Know About This Form

What is the purpose of the AKC Foreign Dog Registration Application?

The AKC Foreign Dog Registration Application serves as a way for individuals to register dogs that were born outside of the United States. To be eligible for registration, the dog must belong to a breed that the American Kennel Club recognizes for individual registration in its Stud Book. This application ensures that foreign-born dogs can be officially recognized under AKC standards, facilitating their participation in competitions and events.

What should I include with my application?

You must accompany the completed application with specific items to ensure proper processing. These include a clear, legible photocopy of the original unrestricted registration certificate from the dog’s country of birth, a certified pedigree indicating three generations of ancestry, and two color photographs of the dog in specific poses (one from the front and one from the side). Make sure all documentation reflects identical ownership, and do not send any original documents.

What are the processing fees associated with this application?

The processing fees for the AKC Foreign Dog Registration vary, and they must be paid in U.S. funds. It’s important to note that these fees are nonrefundable. Additionally, fees are subject to change without prior notice. Consult page 3 of the form to find the most up-to-date fee information.

Do I need to provide any identification for the dog?

Yes, positive identification is required for the registration. This can be fulfilled by providing details such as a microchip number, tattoo, or DNA certificate number. It is crucial that this section of the application is filled out correctly to prevent delays in processing.

Can I submit original documents along with my application?

No, you should only submit photocopies of the required documents. The American Kennel Club explicitly requests that applicants do not send original registration certificates or pedigrees. This precaution helps ensure that important documents are not lost during the registration process.

Is registration guaranteed once I submit my application?

Registration is not guaranteed upon submitting your application. The AKC reserves the right to review all submitted materials and verify the authenticity of the information provided. Any inaccuracies or misrepresentations could lead to a denial of registration or cancellation of existing registration, so accuracy is paramount.

What happens if my dog has already participated in AKC events?

If your dog has already participated in AKC-member or AKC-licensed events with a foreign registration number for more than thirty days, you will need to request an extension to continue showing the dog. This request can be made by writing to Event Operations at the AKC, providing them with the necessary details to process your inquiry.

Who can apply for the registration?

The application must be completed and signed by the first U.S. owner (the importer) or the foreign owner of the dog. If there are multiple owners, all must be identified on the application. In cases where the dog was sold to another party, a Supplemental Transfer Statement must accompany the application to document any intermediate transfers.

What if I have questions or need assistance?

If you have further questions about the registration process or need assistance, you can reach out to the AKC directly via email at foreign@akc.org or by calling their Customer Service Representatives at 919-233-9767. They are available Monday to Friday from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM to help with any inquiries you may have.

What should I do if I want to verify the eligibility of my dog's breed for registration?

To verify that your dog’s breed is eligible for individual registration in the AKC Stud Book, you can refer to the AKC’s website or contact them directly. Specific eligibility details are often required for different breeds, and the AKC can provide clarity based on the dog’s breed and lineage.

Common mistakes

Filling out the AKC Foreign Dog Registration form can feel overwhelming, especially when it comes to ensuring all details are accurate and complete. One common mistake is leaving out crucial information about the dog itself, such as the Date of Birth or the Dog’s Foreign Registration Number. Failing to provide essential details can lead to delays in processing, so it’s vital to double-check this section before submitting your application.

Another frequent error is using illegible handwriting or not following the instructions regarding ink type and letter casing. The form specifically requests that you use black ink and print in capital letters. Using other colors or lowercase letters can create confusion and may hinder the registration process. Always remember: clarity here is key!

People often forget to include required attachments as well. When submitting your application, you must provide photocopies of the dog’s foreign registration certificate and pedigree. Neglecting to include these documents can result in unnecessary complications. Always review the list of required items mentioned on the form.

Another oversight occurs when individuals attempt to submit the original documents instead of photocopies. The instructions explicitly state to send only legible copies. Submitting originals could lead to loss or delays, and it certainly won't speed up the registration process. Protect your important documents by making copies instead.

Incorrectly filling out the contact information is another misstep that can lead to significant issues. People often make errors in phone numbers or email addresses, making it difficult for the AKC to reach them if there are questions about the application. It's wise to double-check this section for accuracy to ensure smooth communication.

Additionally, some applicants forget to sign the form. Signatures are a critical part of the application, and without them, it cannot be processed. Take a moment at the end of the form to verify that all required signatures are present before sending it off.

Lastly, not reviewing the entire form and the instructions thoroughly can result in missed details or requirements. Each of the steps is in place for a reason, and ensuring that you understand them will significantly minimize the chances of mistakes. Always read through the instructions completely before you sign and submit your registration application.

Documents used along the form

The AKC Foreign Dog Registration form is essential for registering a dog born outside the U.S. However, several other forms and documents often accompany it to ensure a smooth registration process. Below is a brief list of these important documents, each serving a specific function that supports the registration application.

  • Certificate of Registration: This document is a photocopy of the dog's original registration certificate from its country of origin. It verifies the dog's current registered owner and confirms that the dog is eligible for AKC registration.
  • Pedigree: A clear, legible photocopy of the complete foreign pedigree is required. It traces the dog's lineage for at least three generations, providing proof of its breed and confirming that all ancestors are registered.
  • Photographs: Two color photographs of the dog in a standing position are necessary. One photo should show a front view and the other a side view. These images help verify the dog's identity.
  • Bescheinigung: If applicable, a German certificate of transfer in letter form is needed, confirming the dog's sale or transition documentation. Like other documents, only a photocopy is required.
  • Supplemental Transfer Statement: This form accompanies the application whenever there has been an intermediate transfer of ownership. Each transfer must be documented to establish a clear chain of ownership.
  • DNA Profile: If the dog has been imported, an AKC DNA profile is mandatory before registering its first litter in the U.S. This profile assures the authenticity of the dog's lineage.
  • Authorization Form: If someone other than the recorded owner submits the application, they must file a completed authorization form with the AKC. This ensures that the submission is legitimate and backed by the rightful owner.

Carefully assembling these documents alongside the AKC Foreign Dog Registration form can significantly expedite the registration process. Missing any of these forms or failing to adhere to guidelines may lead to delays or complications in securing your dog's registration. Proper preparation will aid in a smoother experience.

Similar forms

  • AKC Litter Registration Application: Similar to the Foreign Dog Registration form, this document is used to register a litter of puppies born in the U.S. It requires details about the Dam and Sire, as well as the identification of each puppy.
  • AKC Change of Ownership Form: This form allows for the transfer of ownership of a dog already registered with AKC. It requires the current registered owner and the new owner's information, much like the sections concerning ownership in the foreign registration form.
  • AKC Pedigree Application: This document serves to establish and certify the lineage of a dog, similar to how the Foreign Dog Registration requires a three-generation pedigree from the dog's country of origin to confirm its breed and ancestry.
  • International Dog Registration Applications: These vary by country but often require similar identification details, proofs of pedigree, and breed eligibility to register a dog born outside the U.S.
  • Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Application: This application assesses a dog’s training and behavior. It requires documentation about the dog's history, similar to how the Foreign Dog Registration calls for ownership verification.
  • AKC DNA Profiling Kit: While primarily for genetic identification, this form is often necessary when registering breeding dogs and requires specific ownership details akin to the Foreign Dog Registration.
  • Breeder's Litter Certification: Used by breeders to certify the quality and number of puppies in a litter, this document also requires detailed information about the dogs, similar to the comprehensive requirements of the Foreign Dog Registration.
  • Therapy Dog Registration Application: To recognize a dog as a therapy animal, owners must submit detailed information on the dog and its qualifications, paralleling the identification and registration process in the Foreign Dog Registration.
  • AKC Rally and Obedience Registration Forms: These forms require information on the dog’s registration and performance history. They share similarities with the Foreign Dog Registration by necessitating owner and dog information.
  • Service Dog Registration Applications: Similar to the Foreign Dog Registration, these documents require proof of training and owner information to validate the dog’s role as a service animal.

  • Don’t skip any required information; omissions can result in processing delays.

Following these guidelines can significantly smooth the registration process. Ensure that all details are accurate and complete to avoid unnecessary complications.

Misconceptions

  • Misconception 1: All breeds can be registered using the AKC Foreign Dog Registration form.
  • While the form is for registering dogs born in foreign countries, only breeds that are eligible for individual registration in the AKC Stud Book can be processed. Not all breeds qualify, so it is important to check eligibility before applying.

  • Misconception 2: The registration process is guaranteed and will be completed quickly.
  • The AKC does not guarantee registration. Additionally, processing fees are nonrefundable, and the time it takes to process applications can vary greatly. Ensuring that all information is provided accurately is essential to avoid delays.

  • Misconception 3: You must send original documents to register your dog.
  • Applicants should only send clear, legible photocopies of original documents. Sending the originals can result in their permanent loss, as the AKC instructs not to submit original certificates or pedigrees.

  • Misconception 4: Only one owner can be listed on the registration form.
  • The form allows for multiple owners, but if there are more than two, additional documentation is required. If you have multiple owners sharing the dog's registration, be sure to follow the guidelines provided for signatures.

  • Misconception 5: Payment details are optional, and I can send cash.
  • Payment is a crucial part of the registration process and must be made in U.S. funds. Cash should not be sent with the application. Instead, utilize credit card information or a check or money order made out to the American Kennel Club.

Key takeaways

Here are some important points to keep in mind when filling out and using the AKC Foreign Dog Registration form:

  • The application is for registering a dog born outside the United States that is eligible for AKC registration.
  • Use black ink and capital letters to fill in the required information. Omitting details or writing outside the designated boxes can delay processing.
  • Send only photocopies of required documents; do not send original papers.
  • Complete payment details carefully, as registration fees are nonrefundable and subject to changes without notice.
  • Include a clear photocopy of the dog’s foreign registration certificate and pedigree, ensuring they match the ownership details provided.
  • Two photographs of the dog are necessary: one front view and one side view, clearly labeled with the dog's name and registration number on the back.
  • Be sure to sign the application; both owners (if applicable) must provide their signatures to certify the information is true and accurate.
  • Submit the completed application and attachments to the specified mailing address for processing.
