The Story of Dorothy Lane Market®

On August 12, 1948 Calvin D. Mayne and Frank Y. Sakada opened the original Dorothy Lane Market¨ as a fruit stand on the corner of Dorothy Lane and Far Hills Avenue. The receipts for the Þrst day of business totaled $35.00. In spite of many hardships, hard work enabled the partners to expand their business and, in August of 1953, Dorothy Lane Market¨ was moved to its present location at 2710 Far Hills Avenue. Major remodeling fol- lowed in 1958, 1968, 1978, 1988, and 1998. A second store at Washington Square was opened in 1991. A third store in Springboro opened in 2002.

Cal Mayne was probably the best known independent grocer in the United States Ñ maybe even the world. He traveled extensively in this country and abroad speaking to grocers and other retailers about his business philoso- phy and practices that made Dorothy Lane Market¨ so successful. Mr. Mayne summed up his beliefs by saying, ÒMy methods are merely common sense and a deep concern for human beings. The secrets are how you price your goods, the productivity of your personnel, and how you care for their welfareÉwith tremendous emphasis on community service. Most important of all, unceasing attention to public goodwill.Ó These sound business practices enabled Mr. Mayne to Þght the big chains and win. Ownership of Dorothy Lane Market¨ remains in the Mayne family.

Dorothy Lane Market¨ is recognized throughout the country as one of the leading independent grocery stores. Its reputation has attracted visiting grocers from around the country and from as far away as Europe, Japan, and Australia.

Common mistakes

Filling out the DLM Application form is an important step towards joining the team at Dorothy Lane Market. However, many applicants make mistakes that could hinder their chances of landing a job. Identifying and correcting these common errors can make a significant difference.

One major mistake is not providing accurate personal information. It’s crucial to double-check the name, address, and contact details entered on the form. Errors in this section can lead to unnecessary confusion and delays during the hiring process. Take the time to ensure that your information is clear and correct. Remember, first impressions matter!

Another common error involves incomplete employment history. When listing previous employers, it’s important to provide all relevant details, starting from the most recent job. Forgetting to include dates, duties, or reasons for leaving can raise red flags for hiring managers. They want a complete picture of your experience, so be thorough. This is your moment to shine, so don’t hold back!

Sometimes, applicants overlook the importance of the criminal history disclosure. If you have a conviction, it’s better to be upfront and explain the situation rather than leaving it blank. Not addressing this question could be perceived as hiding information. Be honest and clear to foster trust between you and the potential employer.

Lastly, many people forget to sign and date the application. This simple step is often overlooked but is essential. Without a signature, the application may be considered incomplete. The act of signing signifies that all the provided information is accurate and true to the best of your knowledge. Don’t rush through this final step—ensure everything is sealed and delivered properly!

By avoiding these common pitfalls, you can present a polished application that reflects your best self. Take your time, review your entries, and remember that each detail counts. Good luck!
