The MV-232 form is an important document for anyone living in New York State who needs to update their address with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). New York law obligates residents with a driver license, learner permit, non-driver ID card, or vehicle registration to notify the DMV within 10 days of any permanent address change. It’s a straightforward process that can be completed online at dmv.ny.gov or with this form. If your driver license or registration is nearing its expiration date, special instructions apply for making address changes along with renewals. While you do not have to obtain a new document after updating your address, you have the option to request one. Depending on your needs, you can also update your voter registration as part of this process, ensuring your voting information stays current. For those with any outstanding traffic violations, notifying the DMV of your new address is also required. Completing this form involves providing personal information, including your current and new addresses, and marking boxes for the documents you wish to update. Ideal for simplifying your address change process, the MV-232 form serves multiple purposes while helping you stay compliant with state regulations.

INSTRUCTIONS TO UPDATE YOUR ADDRESS

New York State (NYS) law requires you to notify DMV within 10 days of any PERMANENT address change if you have a NYS driver license, learner permit or non-driver ID card, or a NYS registration for a vehicle, boat, or snowmobile. Do NOT report a temporary address change.

You can change your address online at dmv.ny.gov or use this form.

Write your new address on your current regular or enhanced NYS license, permit, or non-driver ID card and on your NYS registration document.

If your regular or enhanced NYS license, permit, non-driver ID card or registration will expire within the next 75 days, call DMV

Monday through Friday from 8:00AM to 4:00PM at any of the numbers listed below for information about how to change your address at the same time you renew your document by mail:

Upstate New York: (518) 486-9786

New York City (from area codes 212, 347, 646, 718, 917 or 929): (212) 645-5550, or (718) 966-6155

Other Downstate Areas and Long Island (from area codes 516, 631, 845, or 914): (718) 477-4820

From Outside New York State: (518) 473-5595

If you change your address, you do not have to get a new license, permit, non-driver ID card, or registration document, but you have the option to get a new document.

If you want a new document, complete Part 1 and Part 2 on page 2 of this form, sign your name in the “Certification” section, and mail your completed form with your payment to DMV at the address shown below. Keep your current document(s) until you receive your new document(s) in the mail in 4 to 6 weeks. If you request an enhanced license, permit, or ID card, your residence address will be shown on your document and your document will be mailed to your mailing address. If you request a regular license, permit, or ID card, your mailing address will be shown on your document.

If you DO NOT want a new document, complete Part 1 but do not complete Part 2. DMV will update your DMV record(s) at no cost.

If you moved to NYS from a location outside of NYS, you can find information about how to get a NYS driver license, permit, non-driver ID card, an enhanced version of those documents, and a vehicle registration at dmv.ny.gov or you can call DMV Monday through Friday from 8:00AM to 4:00PM at any of the telephone numbers listed above.

If you have unpaid Traffic Violations Bureau (TVB) tickets, you must use this form to report your address change. You must call TVB to provide your new address and make arrangements to pay your fines. In the downstate area, call (718) 488-5710. In the Buffalo and Rochester area, call (518) 474-0941. A list of all TVB office locations can be found at dmv.ny.gov/tvboffice.htm.

Complete and sign this form. If you want to purchase a replacement document, write a check or money order made payable to “Commissioner of Motor Vehicles” for the total fee. Mail the completed, signed form and, if applicable, a check or money order to:

What You Should Know About This Form

What is the purpose of the MV-232 form?

The MV-232 form is used to notify the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) about a permanent address change. This notification is required within 10 days of the address change if the individual holds a New York State driver license, learner permit, non-driver ID card, or if they have a vehicle, boat, or snowmobile registration in New York State.

How can I change my address?

You can change your address either online at the DMV website (dmv.ny.gov) or by completing the MV-232 form. If you choose to use the form, you must provide your new address and submit it according to the instructions provided.

Do I need to obtain a new license or registration after changing my address?

What happens if my license or other documents expire soon after my address change?

If your current regular or enhanced license, permit, or non-driver ID card is set to expire within the next 75 days, it is advisable to contact DMV. You can obtain information about changing your address while also renewing your document by calling the appropriate DMV number based on your New York State region.

Is there a fee for requesting a new document with my updated address?

Yes, if you opt for a new document that reflects your updated address, fees will apply. For example, the fee for a driver license or learner permit is $17.50, while the fee for registration is $3.00 per registration. Fees may vary depending on the type of document and your eligibility for reduced fees.

What should I do if I have unpaid traffic violations?

If you have unpaid traffic violations, you must report your address change using the MV-232 form. Additionally, you need to contact the Traffic Violations Bureau (TVB) to update your address and make arrangements for payment of any fines. Specific contact numbers for the TVB offices are provided in the form instructions.

Can I change my address for voter registration using this form?

Yes, when you submit the MV-232 form, your address change will also update your voter registration record in New York State. If you do not wish for your new address to be sent to the Board of Elections, you can indicate that on the form.

What should I do if I moved to New York State from another location?

If you have relocated to New York State from outside the state, you need to follow the instructions on obtaining a New York State driver license, permit, non-driver ID card, or vehicle registration. This process can be done online or by calling the DMV for information.

How long will it take to receive my new document?

After submitting your completed MV-232 form for a new document, it typically takes about 4 to 6 weeks to receive it in the mail. During this time, it is essential to keep your current document until your new one arrives, as it remains valid until then.

Common mistakes

Filling out the MV-232 form might seem straightforward, but mistakes can easily creep in. Recognizing and correcting these pitfalls is essential to ensure your address change is processed smoothly. Here are eight common errors people make:

First, many individuals forget to complete both parts of the form. Part 1 is necessary if you're merely changing your address without requiring a new document. However, if you want a replacement document, you must fill out Part 2 as well. Leaving out critical sections could delay processing your form.

Another common mistake is omitting vital information about the new address. It’s important to include not just the street name and number but also the apartment number or P.O. box if applicable. Incomplete address details can lead to confusion or a failure to update your records.

Some people mistakenly assume that changing their address on the MV-232 form will automatically update their voter registration. While it does, it's crucial to check the box indicating that you want this change reflected on your voter registration record. Otherwise, your voter registration might remain outdated.

In addition, providing inaccurate contact information is a frequent error. Ensure your phone number is current. If the DMV needs to reach out regarding your submission, an incorrect number could result in missed opportunities for clarification or updates.

Failing to sign the form is another critical oversight. A signature is required to certify that the information provided is accurate. A missing signature can halt the entire process, forcing you to start over.

Moreover, some applicants overlook the payment section when requesting a replacement document. If you opt to receive a new document, ensure that you include a check or money order made out to "Commissioner of Motor Vehicles." Without payment for applicable fees, the request cannot be completed.

There are also individuals who forget to supply previous address information when required. This detail helps the DMV match your new address to your past documentation. Neglecting it can cause delays in processing your request.

Finally, many applicants rush through the process, leading to errors. Take your time to read each instruction carefully and double-check your entries. A thoughtful approach will save you from potential headaches down the road.

Documents used along the form

When changing your address in New York State, you may find that several other documents or forms accompany the MV-232 form. These documents serve different purposes, assisting with updating your information across various state agencies and ensuring compliance with state laws. Below are four common forms and documents often used alongside the MV-232.

  • NYS Voter Registration Application: This application is essential for anyone who wants to register to vote or update their voter registration information in New York State. If you're submitting the MV-232 to update your address, this application will ensure your voter registration reflects your new address as well, allowing you to participate in local elections without any issues. Make sure to check the relevant boxes regarding your eligibility and political party enrollment.
  • DMV Non-Driver Identification Card Application: Those who do not possess a driver’s license but wish to update their address might need this application. It allows individuals to apply for a non-driver ID card while providing all necessary personal information. If you're using the MV-232 to change your address and you also want a non-driver ID, this document is crucial.
  • Traffic Violations Bureau (TVB) Address Change Notification: If you have any outstanding traffic tickets, you must not only update your address through the MV-232 but also provide your new address to the TVB to avoid complications. This communication ensures that any notices related to your violations reach you at the correct address, allowing you to fulfill your obligations.
  • Vehicle Registration Application: If you own a vehicle and are changing your address, updating your vehicle registration is mandatory. This application, used alongside the MV-232, allows you to modify the registration details of your vehicle(s) to reflect your new address accurately. This ensures that paperwork, such as renewal notices and legal information, is sent to your current address.

Using the MV-232 form in conjunction with these other documents will help ensure that all your records are current and accurate. This multi-faceted approach facilitates compliance with state regulations and enhances your ability to receive important information, particularly regarding voting and vehicle management. When you change your address, taking these additional steps can save you time and stress in the long run.

Similar forms

The MV-232 form is essential for updating your address with the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Several similar forms serve related purposes. Here’s how they compare:

  • DMV Change of Address Receipt: Like the MV-232, this document also confirms your updated address with the DMV. It acts as proof that your address has been officially changed in their records.
  • NYS Voter Registration Application: This form allows you to register or update your address for voting purposes. Similar to the MV-232, both forms ensure that your records reflect your current residence.
  • DMV Driver License Application: When applying for a new driver’s license, you must provide your current address. This application captures the same critical information about your residence, ensuring that the DMV has accurate records.
  • DMV Registration Renewal Form: When renewing your vehicle registration, you may also need to update your address. Like the MV-232, this form helps keep your vehicle registration current with the DMV.
  • Voter Registration Update Form: If you’ve moved, this form helps you update your voting information. Just like the MV-232, it ensures that your current address is reflected in the appropriate government database.

Dos and Don'ts

When filling out the MV-232 form, here are 8 things to keep in mind:

  • Do use your current address when completing the form.
  • Do provide all required information in Part 1 to ensure your address is updated correctly.
  • Do remember to sign the form; your signature is necessary for processing.
  • Do call DMV or Traffic Violations Bureau if you have questions about any unpaid tickets.
  • Don’t report a temporary address; only permanent changes are accepted.
  • Don’t leave any sections blank; incomplete forms could delay your request.
  • Don’t provide false information; this could result in legal penalties.
  • Don’t forget to keep a copy of the completed form for your records.

Misconceptions

Mv 232 Form Misconceptions

  • Changing your address is only necessary for drivers: Many people believe that only those with a driver’s license need to update their address. However, anyone with a New York State (NYS) non-driver ID or vehicle registration must also notify the DMV of an address change.
  • You can report temporary address changes with this form: Some individuals think they can use the Mv 232 form for temporary address changes. This is incorrect. The form is only meant for permanent address changes.
  • A new license or ID is required for every address change: Another misconception is that you must always get a new license or ID when you change your address. In fact, you can update your DMV record at no cost and keep your current documents if you prefer.
  • If your address changes, your voter registration automatically updates: People often assume that their voter registration information will be updated automatically when they submit the Mv 232 form. While this is true unless you opt out, confirming with the Board of Elections is a good practice.
  • You can’t change your registration if you have unpaid fines: It is mistakenly believed that you cannot change your address if you have unpaid tickets. In reality, you can still report your address change but may need to contact the Traffic Violations Bureau concerning your fines.

Key takeaways

Understanding the Mv 232 form and its processes is crucial for maintaining accurate records with the New York State DMV. Here are key takeaways regarding its use:

  • Report any permanent address changes within 10 days of moving if you hold a driver's license, permit, or non-driver ID card.
  • You can complete your address change online at dmv.ny.gov or by using the Mv 232 form.
  • Write your new address on both your current identification documents and your vehicle registration.

  • If you do not need a new document, simply fill out Part 1 of the form to update your records without any cost.

  • New documents are typically mailed within 4 to 6 weeks after completion of the form.
  • If transferring from outside New York State, visit the DMV website or call for guidance on obtaining state documents.
  • Unpaid Traffic Violations Bureau (TVB) tickets necessitate using this form to update your address; additional arrangements are required for fines.
  • Completing the form updates your voter registration address unless you opt out, so be sure to check the appropriate box if you wish to keep your current voter registration address.
