How to Buy a Trailer in Florida?
You can buy either a new or used trailer in Florida. After you become the owner of the vehicle, you will have to register it as required.
If it is a used trailer currently registered in the state, you will need to provide the following documents:
- Bill of sale
- Registration of the previous owner
- Photo ID issued by the state
If it is a used trailer not registered in the state, the list of required documents includes the following:
- Bill of sale
- Weight slip
- Out-of-state title
- Photo ID issued by the state
If it is a trailer of over 2,000 pounds, you are also required to title it.
All the procedures can be completed at the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV).
To obtain a certificate of title, you will need to provide the following documents:
- Proof of identity
- Proof of ownership (Florida trailer bill of sale can be used)
- Proof of insurance coverage
- Completed HSMV Form 82040
As you can see, you must have a bill of sale for registration and titling of your trailer when it is required. You can use a Notice of Sale or Bill of Sale form. In essence, it includes both forms in one. The seller and the buyer must fill out sections 1, 2 (if applicable), and section 3 to finalize the deal.
